Concussion - Cindy
CASE STUDY / Concussion
Symptoms: Migraines, issues with executive function, attention and word finding.
Cindy came to Gray Matters 6 months after receiving a concussion from an accident at home. She was sliding up her window in her new apartment, but the window had been incorrectly fitted, and it slammed back down on the right side of her head, squashing her head between the window and the window frame below.
When Cindy came to Gray Matters six months after a concussion, she was still unable to work. She had trouble concentrating and found it hard finding the words she wanted to say. She was assessed using our advanced SW LORETA qEEG, which showed reduced brain activity in the two sides of her head, exactly matching her description of the injury.
Cindy’s qEEG brain mapping showed an injury known as a coup contracoup (French for hit, counter-hit). The reduced activity in her left hemisphere was from her brain impacting the left side of her skull, due to the stored momentum from the window. This area of the brain is responsible for language, with the reduced function visible in her imaging consistent with her difficulties with word-finding. The injury in the middle of the brain, and on the right side is from the contracoup injury – the brain bouncing in the opposite direction, with the two hemispheres colliding in the middle before impacting the right hemisphere on the opposite side. Cindy’s brain connectivity showed the functional effect of her injury, with significant deficits in brain connectivity in the left hemisphere.
After just 15 sessions of SW LORETA neurofeedback, Cindy’s brain looked and felt significantly better, and she was able to return to work.
