reduce symptoms and improve function.

WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK THERAPY?

Brain activity (EEG) is monitored by powerful computers and analyzed in real-time. As the data comes in, a program adjusts the brightness of a television screen higher to reward, or lower depending on the brain activity desired. The process is unconscious, making it effective for patients of all ages.

Gray Matters uses the most advanced form of neurofeedback available, SW LORETA neurofeedback, to reward improvements in highly targeted brain areas and functional networks - for better results in fewer sessions For residents of Westport, CT.

NEUROFEEDBACK - AS SIMPLE AS WATCHING TV

Creating an individualized neurofeedback protocol is complex, but for residents of Westport, CT, the patient’s role is simple. The patient watches a movie with the screen brightness and sound directly linked to their brain activity, in real-time. Desired brain activity is rewarded by a brighter, louder movie, while less desired brain activity dims and quiets it. The brain learns this connection quickly, allowing it to be guided towards better function. As the process is repeated, the learning becomes stronger and the changes more permanent.

FAQ'S

How long has it been around?

The use of neurofeedback therapy dates back to the 1960’s, when Joe Kamiya successfully trained people to increase slower EEG (alpha). They reported feeling more relaxed and less anxious. A few years later, Barry Sterman successfully trained cats to increase EEG between 12 and 15 Hz on the motor strip, by automatically rewarding them with food. The same cats were later used in an epilepsy study and found to be highly resistant to seizures, leading to the use of neurofeedback to treat human epilepsy.

Despite its early success, neurofeedback therapy didn’t become mainstream until the mid-1990’s, when modern computers made the approach more accessible. Since then, advances in computer power and neuroscience have converged to make highly sophisticated neurofeedback widely accessible.

Are there different kinds of neurofeedback therapy?

Yes, neurofeedback therapy various significantly in sophistication and how individualized it is to each person. There are 3 types of neurofeedback approaches:

  • Packaged neurofeedback – matching treatment to difficulties, but with no customization.
  • Traditional EEG surface neurofeedback – more flexible and requiring more expertise, effective for a wide range of issues.
  • qEEG LORETA neurofeedback – the most sophisticated, using 3-d imaging to train specific brain areas and functional networks. More effective and targeted, producing better results in less time.

Is there much research on neurofeedback therapy?

At the time of writing, there are 21,500 studies on the efficacy of neurofeedback. Based on some of these studies, in 2013 the American Academy of Pediatricians raised their rating of neurofeedback for the treatment of ADHD to “Level 1 – best support”. Who else uses neurofeedback? Clinicians, hospitals and clinics all over the world, including the US Department of Defense and the VA.

Who else uses neurofeedback therapy?

Clinicians, hospitals and clinics worldwide, including the US Department of Defense and the VA.

Will it change my personality or dull special talents?

No. Neurofeedback protocols are designed to treat symptoms and improve function, no-one loses special abilities. We’ve treated Olympic athletes, concert musicians and top executives – all were helped by neurofeedback without losing their “edge”.

How is it regulated?

Neurofeedback is regulated under the various licenses of its providers. Certification in neurofeedback is provided by the BCIA. Certification in qEEG by the International qEEG Certification Board.

What is your success rate?

Around 90 % of our clients experience significant improvements.

Are there possible side effects?

Although some clinics claim neurofeedback is completely free of side-effects, we don’t agree: Nothing can claim to change brain function for the better, without having the ability of changing it for the worse. This is why experience and training counts.

With over 40 years of experience, we know neurofeedback. With almost all our neurofeedback training, we are rewarding the brain for moving specific function towards normal. This reduces the possibility of “over-training” - pushing the brain too far and having unwanted side-effects.

How many sessions do I need?

Most people with Gray Matters do around 40 sessions of neurofeedback.
