qEEG BRAIN MAPPING THERAPY WESTPORT CT

qEEG allows brain activity that was previously invisible, to be visible and measurable -
going beyond symptom description to show the underlying cause.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

WHAT IS qEEG BRAIN MAPPING?

qEEG brain mapping therapy is the recording of the brain’s electrical activity (EEG), easily measurable from the scalp surface, that is then compared to an FDA-registered database of normal brain activity for people of different ages in Westport, CT This comparison turns EEG into qEEG (quantitative EEG) – allowing the matching of symptoms or difficulties to measurable brain function.

Unlike other methods of brain imaging, qEEG is non-invasive and simple, We record qEEG in a pleasant office environment (in a comfortable reclining chair), using soft caps with built-in sensors. We’ve recorded tens of thousands of qEEG’s, for Westport,  CT, clients ranging in age from 2 years to people in their 80’s.

OUR DIFFERENCE

QUALITY

qEEG recording requires skill and experience. Every stage of our assessments are done by the most qualified people. Quality data produces quality results – especially important when diagnosis and treatment is based on this analysis.

OWNERSHIP

Gray Matters is the only clinic in Westport, CT, licensed to hold qEEG databases on our computers. (We don’t email brain recordings and receive computer generated reports.) Instead, our real-time, interactive software allows us to:

  1. Check the quality of recordings in real time and resolve issues immediately, making our recordings more reliable.
  2. Review your findings with you immediately after your recording, exploring and explaining your brain function with you.
  3. Give you the most sophisticated analysis available, in one visit.

EXPERIENCE

We’ve been recording and analyzing qEEG brain mapping since 2008. We’ve seen thousands of patients and recorded tens of thousands of qEEG’s.

SOPHISTICATION

Not all QEEG brain mapping therapy is the same: Gray Matters uses the most advanced techniques available, producing 3-dimensional images and the measurement of brain activity in internal brain structures.

REPORTING

Our qEEG brain mapping reports are individually and thoughtfully written, reflecting your (or your child’s) history, difficulties, and needs. Our diagnosis and treatment recommendations are highly individualized, giving you a practical road map for treatment (whether with us or one of our referrals).

EXPERTISE

The staff at Gray Matters hold the highest credentials in qEEG brain mapping therapy. We are recognized as experts by our colleagues and by experts from other fields. We provide brain mapping therapy to all Westport, CT residents.

Gray Matters qEEG brain mapping reports have been admitted in evidence in injury cases all over the U.S., and even requested by some judges.

FAQ'S

Who Uses qEEG Brain Mapping Therapy?

qEEG brain mapping is used by tens of thousands of hospitals universities and clinics all over the world, ranging from NASA to the Veterans Association. (For a partial list, see link.) It is now being used by the NFL, the Department of the Defense, and in simpler devices even available online, such as the Muse.

Why haven’t I heard of it before?

qEEG brain mapping has been around for a while, but modern computer power has made it more practical and accessible. (The first qEEG database was developed by NASA in the 1960’s, as part of their selection process for aspiring astronauts.) The use of qEEG has become far more common in the last 10 years, but many clinicians were trained before this.

Is it safe?

Yes, EEG recordings are completely passive, a way of “listening” to your brain’s activity - like a stethoscope or an EKG.

Will I feel anything?

No, there’s nothing to feel. EEG simply records the electrical activity your brain naturally produces, easily measurable from the surface of the scalp. (Just like an EKG measures your heart muscle from the skin’s surface.) Your brain is like little power station and its electrical energy is easy to record.

How does qEEG brain mapping compare to other imaging techniques, like MRI, SPECT or DTI?

All these imaging techniques have been cross validated, meaning they show similar results. Different techniques have different advantages; QEEG measures the electrical activity of neurons as they fire, which gives it very good temporal validity. Other imaging techniques measure the metabolic processes that occur afterwards. Currently, qEEG is the only imaging method with normative databases, allowing comparisons between people.

QEEG is the least invasive and most accessible form of functional brain imaging available. Although it doesn’t have the precision of fMRI or DTI, sophisticated statistical modeling makes up for this. The SW LORETA imaging used by Gray Matters localizes brain activity with incredible accuracy and is often the preferred method to locate issues before neurosurgery.

Why do different clinics produce different qEEG reports?

Sadly, qEEG is unregulated and there is huge variability in the quality and usefulness of qEEG reports. Most clinics use automated report writing – they email raw recordings and receive a report back, some time later.

Is qEEG operator dependent?

Yes. Good recording takes considerable experience and skill. It should not be delegated to less experienced staff. Gray Matters regularly sees people who received qEEG’s from other clinics. We almost always have to re-record them. (We normally do this at a reduced charge.)

What kind of qualifications do you need to have?

None. At a minimum, clinicians should be licensed mental health professional, but sadly, all qualifications and certifications in the field are voluntary. At Gray Matters, we believe that holding a diplomate in qEEG shows the minimum level of knowledge required. (There are only around 100 qEEG diplomates in the world.

What if I’m on medication?

Assessments normally take place with patients on their usual medication, as this shows us how it’s working. There are times when medication can be stopped before an assessment, but only under the supervision of your prescriber. (There are times when we assess people both on and off medication, to gauge the difference – especially in the case of stimulants.)

Does it vary on the time of day, or how much I sleep?

To a degree, but clinically significant changes in qEEG will be measurable at any time of the day. Ideally, reassessments should take place at a similar time to the original assessment.

Can I drink coffee?

It’s best to follow your normal routine, so we can assess your function as it normally is.

What do I need to know before my qEEG?

The only prerequisite is having clean, dry hair. We ensure we have research level recording quality at each electrode site (under 5 kOhms), but wet hair makes recording impossible. (We do have hairdryers if necessary!)
