Concussion - Tanner
CASE STUDY / Concussion
Symptoms: Post-Concussion Syndrome Symptoms: Mood changes, especially depression.
Tanner was an honors college student and gifted athlete who received a football scholarship to his college. Early in his sophomore year, Tanner was tackled head-on while wearing a poorly fitted helmet. He received a significant concussion and suffered from headaches and issues with concentration that left him unable to study or play football for a month. After these symptoms resolved, Tanner was cleared to return to play.
But Tanner, who was normally happy and even keeled, was also experiencing changes in mood, becoming depressed and anxious. When he returned to play, he experienced frequent nausea, but was encouraged to “push through” by his coaches. After weeks of struggling to train and play, Tanner was forced to withdraw from football, despite his medical center being convinced he was recovered. A short time later, Tanner took a medical leave from college.
Tanner was evaluated at Gray Matters five months later, still struggling with depression. QEEG brain mapping showed Tanner’s brain still showed evidence of significant concussion, with measured brain functioned at more than 4 standard deviations from normal.
