DEPRESSION - NANCY
CASE STUDY / DEPRESSION
SYMPTOMS: DEBILITATING DEPRESSION
“Nancy”, one of our patients, described a lifelong struggle with depression. She suffered from debilitating depression throughout high school, continuing to suffer with varying severity until her 50’s. Over the years she tried innumerable medications, as well as TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation). Like many people, she came to Gray Matters as a last hope, after all other approaches seemed to have failed.
Nancy’s surface qEEG showed an increase in slower brain waves (theta) in central brain areas involved in emotional processing, a finding that reflected her fundamentally “low” feeling. It also showed an increase in faster brain waves associated with anxiety, which often accompanies depression.
Nancy rented a neurofeedback system from Gray Matters to use at home. These systems use the same technology we use in the clinic, but she was able to train on her own schedule, but still with our support. Nine months later, Nancy felt remarkably better and confident enough to stop treatment. She returned the system and did her final re-evaluation, showing such a significant improvement that her qEEG profile was hardly recognizable:
